My sister joined the Peace Corps and is leaving for the South Pacific. What kind of gear can I get her?
Q. There is no electricity or running water on the island. I've already purchased a headlamp that runs on AA batteries. She already has good terrain sandals. I want her Christmas present from me to have additional necessary items I think she'll need over there. Any suggestions? Former Peace Corp volunteers - a must to answer!

A. Not even a Honda generator? Even when I was a PCV in the 1970's, most small villages had one or two. The things I liked were paper-back copies of books by authors that were hard to find in Borneo; I was a science fiction nut, back then. Newsweek gave us all complimentary subscriptions, back then. If they don't now, a subscription to it or Time would be nice. The toothbrushes they sold locally were too hard; I wish someone had sent me some soft ones. My grandmother wrote every week, on paper, and sent me the "Peanuts" comic strips for the week. I looked forward to those letters a lot. Will joining the peace corps make it harder to get a job with the FBI?
Q. I know the CIA and NSA and other security agencies want to avoid association with the peace corps and tend to avoid hiring former volunteers, but is the same true of the FBI? So, will the peace corps hurt my chances? I'm planning on either going to law school or getting some other appropriate advanced degree.

A. I doubt it very much. I think it would be a good experience for you. I hope you realize that you have to be a professional prior to applying for an FBI or CIA position. i.e. a lawyer, accountant, engineer, etc.

How often should you water a peace lily plant?
Q. My peace lily I got recently seems to wilt a lot, and the 'flowers' on it often go brown, but as soon as I water it, it picks up and looks fine again the next day. How often should I water it to keep it consistently healthy, and how much? Thanks! Also, should I try to keep it away from too much light?

A. Peace Lilies, like the Fittonia, are thirsty plants that like to be kept evenly moist. Moist, not soaking. You can't water plants on a schedule - it's a recipe for disaster as the conditions fluctuate during the seasons and the plants needs change through the year. You need to develop an eye for when the soil looks and feels dry. I would water the lily when the top of the soil feels *just* moist to the touch. I think every other day is excessive. Over-watering is the biggest killer of house plants. It all depends on your local climate but learning when to water based on the plant is the only safe way. Twice a week is better, but check if it needs it with your finger.
