Peace (symbol: ) is a quality describing a society or a relationship that is operating harmoniously. This is commonly understood as the absence of hostility, or the existence of healthy or newly-healed interpersonal or international relationships, safety in matters of social or economic welfare, the acknowledgment of equality and fairness in political relationships and, in world matters, peacetime; a state of being absent of any war or conflict. Reflection on the nature of peace is also bound up with considerations of the causes for its absence or loss. Among these potential causes are: insecurity, social injustice, economic inequality, political and religious radicalism, and acute racism and nationalism. From the Anglo-Norman pas , and meaning "freedom from civil disorder", the English word came into use in various personal greetings from c.1300 as a translation of the biblical terms pax (from the Vulgate) and Greek eirene, which in turn were renderings of the Hebrew shalom. Shalom, cognate with the Arabic "salaam", has multiple meanings: safety, welfare, prosperity, security, fortune, friendliness. The personalized meaning is reflected in a nonviolent lifestyle, which also describes a relationship between any people characterized by respect, justice and goodwill. This latter understanding of peace can also pertain to an individual's sense of himself or herself, as to be "at peace" with one's own mind attested in Europe from c.1200. The early English term is also used in the sense of "quiet", reflecting a calm, serene, and meditative approach to the family or group relationships that avoids quarreling and seeks tranquility — an absence of disturbance or agitation.

In many languages the word for peace is also used a greeting or a farewell, for example the Hawaiian word Aloha. In English the word peace is used as a farewell, especially for the dead as in Rest In Peace, RIP.

What exactly does the US military have against the Peace Corp?
Q. I've been in the army myself but not the Peace Corp, but I've always wondered why there seemed to be restrictions on Peace Corp members from joining the military. Grant it, I'm sure someone will answer that one is about peace and the other war, but I think when you scratch the surface their missions aren't too different. Anyway, what is the reasoning behind this? Wouldn't Peace Corp experience be a good thing for a soldier to have?

A. I served in Peace Corps and the reason for the restrictions date to the Eisenhower age when the US had a lovely policy of sponsored assassinations and coup d'etats. There is a purposeful demarcation between the military and the Peace Corps as well as it is a nonpartisan sacred cow. But you are right about the similarity in parts of mission. It has been very successful on the small project, sustainable development front and there is a major objection to active duty military members serving in Peace Corps because of that close community work. The mission of PC does not want to be seen in the sometimes negative association the US military has had. However, we are allowed to serve in the military once we are done and one of my friends… [cont.]

Are there any good alternatives to the Peace Corps?
Q. Would love to find something similar to the Peace Corps but with a shorter commitment. Also, I've heard that volunteers lose any chance of future federal clearance, which could hurt the chances of entering a career that the Peace Corps could prepare you for. Any suggestions? Preferably something overseas... As for the military, I wouldn't want to sell my soul to the oilman-in-chief that's currently in command.

A. Look into being a VISTA volunteer (another government program) or into some of the large non-profit agencies like Habitat for Humanity or educational programs. If you have a degree from a university or are working toward one, you can explore your field and talk to organizations that serve or work in your field. Perhaps you could land an internship or externship. Good luck!!! Thanks for wanting to volunteer, too.
