A military is an organization authorized by its country to use force, usually including use of weapons, in defending its country (or by attacking other countries) by combating actual or perceived threats. As an adjective the term "military" is also used to refer to any property or aspect of a military. Militaries often function as societies within societies, by having their own military communities, economies, education, medicine and other aspects of a functioning civilian society.

The profession of soldiering as part of a military group is older than recorded history itself. Some of the most enduring images of the classical antiquity portray the power and feats of its military leaders. The Battle of Kadesh in 1274 BC was one of the defining points of Pharaoh Ramesses II's reign and is celebrated in bas-relief on his monuments. A thousand years later the first emperor of unified China, Qin Shi Huang, was so determined to impress the gods with his military might that he was buried with an army of terracotta soldiers. The Romans were dedicated to military matters, leaving to posterity many treatises and writings as well as a large number of lavishly carved triumphal arches and columns.

In the modern era, world wars and countless other major conflicts have changed the employment of the militaries beyond recognition to their ancient participants. Empires have come and gone; states have grown and declined. Enormous social changes have been wrought, and military power continues to dominate international relations. The role of the military today is as central to global societies as it ever was.

How will the military help me after college?
Q. I thought of two things: It will look good on my resume. So I will have an easier time getting jobs. And, I could use my four years of military to pay for my masters and doctorate degrees for college. What other benefits could I get from the military?

A. What benefits will prior military service give you in the civilian world is a very broad question. First of all, are you in college now or thinking of going to college, or do you have you bachelors? Educational wise you will be eligible for the GI Bill. The current bill the service member pays an initial $1200 or so and than in return receives $40,000 in return for college. You can also opt for an additional kicker around $600 or so and receive a larger sum of education assistance and it extends your time to use the funds. However this GI Bill hasn't been updated since 1944 and thankfully the government has realized this. There is a new GI bill in the works still pending approval, but it will give all prior service members about $80,000 to… [cont.]

What military branch is the easiest to get into?
Q. What military branch is the easiest to get into? Can a person who has some problems with urinating get into any of them? How hard is it to get a waiver? To be more specific, the problem urinating is: having trouble starting a stream sometimes. Sometimes it's extremely easy to start a stream, and other times, it's pretty hard and time consuming. Also, does the military give everyone some time off for themselves during the day (in boot camp and in service)? Because if they do, then that might be a good time to spend trying to use the restroom.

A. easy. go to postgrad school as a duty station.. the Masters degree is paid for on the military's dime and time. NPS in Monterey is but one option. AF and I thinkthe Armyhas their own Post Grad school as well. n NPS also offers the option of Doctorates as well, but that is VERY Hard to get.. out of the several hundred or so graduating with DH,, 3 were doctoral candidates.

  • "In the various states of society, armies are recruited from very different motives. Barbarians are urged by the love of war; the citizens of a free republic may be prompted by a principle of duty; the subjects, or at least the nobles, of a monarchy, are animated by a sentiment of honor; but the timid and luxurious inhabitants of a declining empire must be allured into the service by the hopes of profit, or compelled by the dread of punishment".
  • "What the main drift of the twentieth century has revealed is that the economy has become concentrated and incorporated in the great hierarchies, the military has become enlarged and decisive to the shape of the entire economic structure; and moreover the economic and the military have become structurally and deeply interrelated, as the economy has become a seemingly permanent war economy; and military men and policies have increasingly penetrated the corporate economy".
